MFAT Consultation - Marine Biodiversity in the High Seas

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is seeking feedback on New Zealand's negotiations on a new UN treaty about marine biodiversity. This will only apply to the high seas outside of any state's jurisdiction and not New Zealand's own marine areas. Feedback is sought on four main areas;

  • Marine genetic resources, including possible access and benefit sharing arrangements
  • Area-based management tools, including marine protected areas
  • Environmental impact assessments
  • Capacity-building and the transfer of marine technology to developing countries
