Fisheries New Zealand seeks feedback on proposed operational changes to various fisheries regulations that cover commercial, customary, and amateur fisheries.
The proposed changes that apply primarily to commercial fisheries include:
- changes to fishing gear and method regulations for commercial fishers
- record-keeping requirements for stakeholders involved in commercial fisheries
- increasing the number of regulations for which infringement notices can be issued (e.g. use of seabird mitigation devices and record-keeping regulations)
A small number of these proposals would result in additional obligations or increased restrictions on fishers and other commercial entities.
However, most of these additional obligations or restrictions are not considered significant. Some proposals are of an enabling nature and would allow activities that are currently prohibited.
The consultation closes on 5 PM on Friday the 4th of March 2022.
