Entering Positions

FishServe accepts two formats for positions/manual locations:

  • Decimal Degrees (e.g. -44.23456°)
  • Degrees/Minutes (e.g. 44°17.0735’ S)

Both the above examples point to the same location, despite the different numbers.
This means you can’t swap between formats using the same numbers, as this will result in different locations.
For example, entering -44.23456° as 44°23.456’ S would result in two different locations.

What format should I use?

You can use either format. Your plotter and/or onboard GPS likely displays coordinates in a specific format. If that format is one of the two accepted formats, then enter that.

Decimal Degrees

Here are some points to be aware of for entering in the Decimal Degrees format:

  • You must enter at least three decimal places. This will only display up to two decimal places for anyone viewing your reports if you restrict sharing of your fishing locations.
  • You must enter a minus (-) in front of the latitude (e.g. -44.23456°) to indicate a location in the Southern Hemisphere.
  • You may need to enter a minus (-) in front of the longitude depending on which side of the 180° meridian you fish on (e.g. -174.77797°).

Degrees/Minutes

Here are some points to be aware of for entering in the Degrees/Minutes format:

  • There are three fields to complete if you are entering in degrees/minutes:
    • Degrees (e.g. 44°)
    • Minutes (e.g. 13.0736’)
    • Direction (e.g. S, E)
  • The system will automatically add the symbol for degrees (°) and minutes (), so you don’t need to type these.
  • A minus (-) is not required in front of the latitude for the degrees/minutes format as locations in the Southern Hemisphere are indicated with S (e.g. 44°17.0735’ S).
  • You may need to change the direction from E to W depending on which side of the 180° meridian you fish on (e.g. 174°46.6782’ W).

Please refer to our Guide to Entering Manual Locations for more information.
